CPB Review Celebrates Golden Issue |
At the time of this journal's launch in the summer of 2007, the Chinese SFDA was embroiled in a high profile scandal that saw the agency's head toppled (literally) and the pace of drug approvals grind to a virtual standstill; physicians and hospitals were in the midst of battling an MOH initiative (resolution 53) designed to reduce dependence on profits and rebates from pharmaceutical prescribing; and, most significantly, the Chinese population at large was expressing its widespread discontent with the nation's healthcare system with cries of "Kanbingnan! Kanbinggui!" (Seeing a doctor is hard and expensive.) Three years later, as we put to bed our "golden" 50th issue, much has changed for China healthcare and the pharmaceutical industry... or more accurately - much is about to change. China: Business as UNusual. |
"Interest in the private option is just another illustration of how profound the transition is in China's healthcare sector. It's an appropriate conclusion to this story to cite again the magnitude of what is being attempted: basic, blanket, pay-as-you-go health coverage for 1.3 billion people, or more than a sixth of the world's population spread out over 3 million square miles of rural and urban territory, with an aging population subject to vast extremes of income. " - Dr. Jon Zifferblatt, Managing Director General Biologic (GBI)
