Summary stats released in aftermath of Guangdong centralized drug tendering
Wednesday, February 3, 2010

Guangdong Province announced that it has completed centralized drug tendering and has initiated a new round of drug procurement to run from January 1 to December 31, 2010, according to www.southcn.com February 3.

After bidding, expert screening, and (face to face) negotiations, 25,765 drug formulations and specifications (62% of total tendered drugs) have been placed on a short list. 296 types of drugs on the National Essential Drug List are on the provincial tendering list; a remaining 11 types of drugs on the national list that are not commonly used in clinical settings, such as artemisinin, did not participate in tendering.

A total of 2,925 manufacturers and 1,694 distributors participated in the 2009 drug tendering process - a reduction over previous years due to fierce competition, recent M&A activity, and hospital procurement standardization.

According to the report, 1,204 medical institutes participated in the procurement process and all county or above-level medical institutes took part in online procurement. The total purchase amount is expected to reach RMB 29 billion this year.
