Enough sugar to go around- Pfizer/Takeda to co-promote Actos in China
Tuesday, December 15, 2009
Takeda Pharmaceutical Company has entered into an exclusive agreement with Pfizer to co-promote Takeda's diabetes drug, Actos (pioglitazone) in China, PRNewswire reported December 15. According to the agreement, Pfizer will receive royalties based on a fixed ration of drug sales. Both companies will share costs associated with promotion.
Pioglitazone is a thiazolidinedione (TZD) type oral hypoglycemic agent which improves peripheral tissue sensitivity to insulin action. Actos is indicated as a once-daily oral treatment for type II diabetes. The product was developed by Takeda and has been marketed in China since 2004 through Takeda Pharmaceuticals (Tianjin) Company, which is a joint venture of Takeda Pharmaceutical and Tianjin Lisheng Pharmaceutical.
According to GBI SOURCE, Takeda currently has 10 registered products in China-one of which is on the grassroots national essential drug list, and seven of which received national separate pricing. Pfizer also markets Glucotrol (glipizide) in China, for which it has received separate originator national pricing.
